Where am i?

Have you ever had that moment where you wake up and you couldn't figure out where you are? As if the whole logic of your existence doesn't connect anymore. It feels almost like someone has emptied out every corner of your brain. And nor matter how hard you try to remember; you just couldn't fit the puzzle back onto the board. Strangely enough, i've come to like these feelings. The thought of being non-existence, of not knowing where and not understanding why is like a roller coaster ride to me; both creepy and intriguing at the same time.

I just had my dose of non-existence this morning; waking up to a strange and cold hotel room. Have you had yours lately?

By the way, the shots above was taken from a location recce i did back home with candy right before i left for work here. It was taken in a rusty old photo studio downtown. Don't you just love that backdrop? xoxo

Want a dose of Justin B's nail polish?

I woke up this morning, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, to the horror that was before my eyes. Imagine base-jumping off the sinkhole in the middle of guatemala city (you know, the hole that swallowed a house and a three-storey building a while back), times that by say.. #367265 and you'll get the weight of the horror i'm facing. Justin Beaver, the smooching young youtube sensation as we know him, has launched his own line of nail polish for Nicole by OPI! Shocker, rite! Jeez. What's worst is that the 'collection' was released at 3,000 walmart stores across united states and all 3,000 stores completely sold out!!! People, what is happening here? At times of our economy crisis is just at its baby step to recovery, we do not spend money on nail polish from a boy who haven't even finish high school. That's not wise. And i'm sure as hell its not spiritually sound to do so either. People, listen to me.. these whole justin beaver massacre is not cool. Not cool at all.

What's next? His own line of clip-on dentures for the oldies so they can belt out his song without the fear of losing their teeth while at it? Jeez..

Somewhere

I got to spent yesterday's afternoon in the good company of the lovely miss candy at her home at section seventeen; reading script and talking about short films, last christmas party, the horror (depending on how you see it) of bit torrent, and aldo's heels among other things. Other things as in like forcefully recounting back all her ex's and dissecting them into scum bags and weirdos. Ahh.. good ol' times. Won't you agree, miss candy?

I even got to watched one of her film, shot a few years back with hannah and craig, which i've been hearing about it for yonks. And although i was repeatedly interrupted by her constant bickering of whether i need a bite off her famous mushroom toast or if i need coffee, or a banana or that disfigured durian laying in her laundry room, i actually did enjoy the twenty minutes of it. I'm guessing her aussie hospitality hides an ulterior motive of throwing me off her film. She secretly wants me to dislike it for some odd reason which till now i could not clearly justify. She really is her own worst critic. Sign.

As i was leaving, she gave me a copy of Sofia Coppola's Somewhere. 'You'll love it!', that's what she says and boy, was she right! I've always been a fan of sofia's work. Virgin Suicide was on top of my must-see films of all time for years; Marie Antoinnette was a feast for the eye, although i do felt Lost In Translation was rather mediocre and lost to say the least.

Somewhere to me is brilliant film making. The storyline is simple, the cast lineup wasn't desirable mainly because i couldn't take chris pontius seriously after the whole jackass fiesta but what pulled it together was the whole intensity of the characters coming together emotionally in the most natural way, making it all feel real. And real is important. Real is where the heart felt begins. It's where you come to love the characters. It's where you connect them to your life and know that Somewhere is not just a fancy film.

The coolest part about Somewhere? It makes me think that i should really learn how to drive and get one of those ferrarris where you could put like groceries and stuff in the engine area. How cool! Oh, and also want one of those portable/foldable stripper pole as well. You'll never know when it'll come in handy.

Today's Inspiration : Delusional Post-War Soldier

So, i had this recurring dream about me being in this post-war melodrama episode, and i woke up thinking maybe i should really stop watching blast from the past so many a times. And as i was ducking through my drawers trying to get dress for work, i pulled out this rather old and rather tight lil t-shirt i got from shanghai that totally reflect my whole post-war affair. And i thought, i should go to work as a retired-delusional-post-war-soldier-living-on-military-pension for the day!

My inspiration is partly taken from Ryan Kwanten's spread for the september '09 issue of GQ Magazine, and these dreamy fushia/blue
unknown fashion editorial from jetroot.com. And in the photos, i was actually trying to pretend that i'm a channel surfing overweight couch potatoe soldier. I failed, obviously.

By the way, you can't really tell the details on my t-shirt, but its of some forties lieutenant shirt design printed on it. It even has this printed ray ban hanging from the printed breast pocket with a printed nametag on it. The whole nine yard! BUT then i remember why i seldom/never wear it. It has this really weird puff up cap sleeves. Yes, you hear me right, cap-effing-sleeves that puff up like cinderella's pumpkin dress! What a shocker.

Here's the unknown editorial from jetroot.com. I cannot stress enough that if these photos are yours and you want it down, please.. please don't hesitate to let me know. But before you do so, can you give me the number to your retoucher. I think i might need to hire him..

* I'll work harder to resemble my inspiration next time. These ones turned out rather half-baked actually :O

A Love Affair with Kitchen Stories

I was out goggling (actually i was at home, on my bed in my sweats, but i guess 'out' makes me sound like i have a bit of a life.. so, just play along will ya.. ) As i was saying, i was out goggling and i came across this film review on Kitchen Stories. A 2003 norwegian film by Bent Hamer.

'Kitchen Stories centers around a swedish efficiency researchers who came to norway for a study of norwegian men, to optimize their use of their kitchen. Folke Nilsson is assigned to study the habits of Isak Bjørvik. By the rules of the research institute, Folke is on a twenty-four-hour call, and sat in a special strategically placed umpire's chair in Isak's kitchen. And, under no circumstances is Folke allow to be spoken to, or included in the kitchen activities. Somehow, Isak stops using his kitchen and observes Folke through a hole in the ceiling instead. However, the two lonely men slowly overcome the initial post-war Norwegian-Swede distrust and become friends'

Honestly, how bizarre/crazy/insane/willy wonka is that review? The story is damn twisted man, and i'm sure mr hamer would play down the whole craziness of the storyline and make it as subtle as just another gilmore girls moment. I will kill to get a glimpse of it. But thanks to my country and its amazing import laws, i guess i'll prolly be five hundred years old before i could get my hands on it. Why not go through amazon.com or steal it off bit torrent and shit? Well, #1, I don't particularly adore internet transactions. Its like a plaque i try to avoid. #2, I feel bad enough stealing tunes off the net, so i'll keep whatever left of my morals to refrain from downloading movies. I should be at least supportive of my industry. #3, I am just plain lazy. Simple as that.

Anyways, the whole grading and art direction of the film reminds me quite a bit of Fiona Quinn's 'Waiting for the summer' editorial with Emily Smith. I've always got this love affair for the whole forties suburb wash off pastelly look. Do you?

Two Thousand Eleven VS Iliann Loeb

If you know me as a real person and not just words from cyberspace, you'll prolly know that i'm a wuzz. No really. I have peanuts in exchange of guts. I'm not proud but i guess if you're living in karma one too many days, it does things to your head. And in my case, i guess i've turned into a wuzz. Think dobby, the house elf with oriental eyes.

So, for my two thousand eleven new year's resolution, i’ve decided i would like to be a bit braver. I'll be more vocal with my thoughts and i'll put regret in the back seat and just do things i really truly want to do. Which sadly brings me to Iliann Loeb's winter 2011 collection. I'm a big fan of earth tones, knitted sweats, faux fur shearling jacket (thanks to lady yessica) and the lot, but somehow from their lookbook the collection awfully resembles a scary crossover between pirate of the caribbean and jean paul gaultier's spring 2008 collection. Imaginative, but its been done far too many times to be anything genuine. The fabric and its textures looks fantastic though, but it doesn't do justice enough to be retrospective in the new year, does it? Hmm..

See, criticizing some poor designer's hard work is not that difficult. I can be brave. Wait. What's that feeling deep down inside my stomach? A regret bubble, perhaps. Ohh... i'm beginning to feel awful. Maybe I should take a breather and go lie down.

By the way, thank you two thousand eleven, you have turned me into a monster. Meh.

Current Obsession : Tavi Gevinson, the Style Rookie

You know how every boy child is always gaga/smitten/obsess over the aspect of building the next metropolitan with legos when they were young. Well, every other boy child that is, for i was a tragic case of becoming my sister's unwilling slave and would end up every evening religiously doing laundry for her dolls. Yes, i was her maid at a tender age of four. Now that's what i call leadership, mister prime minister :P

Anyhoo, the time i spend away from my legos were wasted on mix-matching micro minis and lacy shinny leggings for her dolls, and to think about it now, it wasn't that bad of an experience actually. Playing dress-up can be fun, just asks Tevi Gevinson of the Style Rookie fame. She's the current fashion wunderkind (at least to me) that has an amazing sense of style and a flair to mash up her findings from thrift shops to hand-me-downs into something betsey johnson would approve. Not many of us can boost about posting an entrée from the front row of new york fashion week, rubbing shoulder pads with marc and yohji, or becoming a muse to rodarte's kate and laura mulleavy. All that done even before her fourteen birthday! How can i not be obsess and a tad bit jealous?

Just last september
New York Post points out that it was Gevinson's third season at Fashion Week, and she received invitations to four shows this season "two more than either courtney love or kanye west got" according to Fashion Week Daily. Eat that, biatch!
